NAGERCOIL: The Indira Gandhi National Open University would shortly introduce a degree course in law and explore ways to include M.B.B.S. as one of the academic programmes, said the Regional Director of IGNOU, B.Sukumar.
Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, he said that the authorities were holding discussion with the apex body of Bar Council in New Delhi to offer B.L. for the benefit of poor students. Kanyakumari district has come under Thiruvananthapuram region for administrative reasons. So candidates who have applied for various courses should send their application forms to the regional office at Chekkalamukku in Thiruvananthapuram.
There were 43 study centres in this region and more than 5,000 students have registered themselves with IGNOU. The aim of the region was to enrol 2,000 students every year in order to facilitate them to pursue higher education. With inclusion of Kanyakumari district to Thiruvananthapuram region, new courses would be offered in various colleges. When India got independence, candidates pursuing higher education was only two per cent and it has gone up to eight per cent. There were only 25 universities and 200 odd colleges in 1947 but now there are 400 universities and 18,000 colleges. As there was a demand for higher education, the Government had decided to open 200 more universities to achieve 15 per cent growth. Dual degree system had been introduced in various regular study centres and it evoked good response.
