Students take message of waste management to the community

COIMBATORE: As an essential part of its Rs. 96-crore Integrated Solid Waste Management Project, the Coimbatore Corporation is trying to generate awareness among the people on the need for a clean city and the segregation of waste and storage in separate bins at home as an essential requirement towards that end.

While the health wing of the Corporation is also involved in the sensitisation exercise, the civic body has enlisted the services of the students to take the message of waste management, especially segregation of waste at source, to the community.

The Corporation is implementing segregation of waste at source (at houses where garbage is generated) in nine model wards: Nos. 3, 6, 16, 23, 24, 25, 43, 49 and 63.

Door-to-door collection as a pilot project has begun in all these wards. In all these, student volunteers of the National Service Scheme from colleges near the wards are being involved in generating awareness among the people.

The Corporation says that awareness creation is made mandatory under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission., under which the waste management and a number of infrastructure development schemes are to be implemented in the city. The Corporation has chosen Green Mother Trust as the consulting agency to create awareness among the public of the nine model wards on solid waste management.

Based on the requirements listed by the Corporation, the trust trains the student volunteers in carrying out the sensitisation programme.

Assistant City Health Officer R. Sumathi says the Corporation wants the message on segregation to reach every section of the community.

The student volunteers will not only give the message in the model wards, but will also take it home, she points out.

Project Head of Green Mother Trust T. Priscilla said her organisation had formed a participatory committee in all the nine model wards with the help of the Corporation’s Sanitary Inspectors who are the Nodal Officers of the committee.

The ward councillor is the head of the committee. It has as members, representatives from the residents’ association, the Corporation’s health wing and educational institutions in the locality.

These members have also been trained by the trust to regularly monitor the waste management system in their wards and submit reports to an apex committee.

Ms. Priscilla says the trust has trained the women Self- Help Groups in the model wards on solid waste management practices.

Training has also been given to sanitary workers and sanitary inspectors of the model wards, headmasters of all the Corporation schools and Corporation health workers. The trust uses methods such as puppet shows, street plays and songs to drive home the message of environment protection, segregation of waste at source waste minimisation.

As door-to-door education is found to be an effective method, NSS volunteers from Avinashilingham University, K.G. College of Nursing and Coimbatore Medical College will play a role in the sensitisation component of the waste management project.

Nearly 500 volunteers from these colleges are being involved, she says.

Students from the medical college fanned out across five model wards in the city on Thursday where the final phase of the door-to-door collection pilot project began.

As many as 140 students from the medical college took the message of segregation to the public, along with the NSS Co-ordinators from the college R. Arun and P. Murugesan.

University reverts to dummy number system

CHENNAI: The University of Madras has decided to turn its back on technology and return to a manual process so far as its examination evaluations are concerned.

Two years ago, students were given personalised and digitally encoded answer sheets for University examinations in an effort to prevent malpractice. The optical mark recognition system was intended to replace the manually-assigned dummy numbers method.

On Friday, however, vice-chancellor G. Thiruvasagam announced that following complaints from students and principals, the University would return to the dummy number system. “It is not fair to give confidential matters to outsiders, who take the papers outside,” he said, after a meeting with principals and management representatives of affiliated colleges. “It also involves a long process, and when there are technical mistakes, students are the ones who suffer.”

A “sizable number” of papers had had such problems over the past year, he said, including cases where failed students had been marked as “pass” and vice versa, and cases where candidates had wrongly been marked absent because of a technical hitch. “With strict monitoring, there will be no chance for malpractice in the dummy number system.”

Dr. Thiruvasagam also hopes that the return to the manual process will cut short the amount of time needed and help to declare results early. He had earlier announced that it would be mandatory for all affiliated colleges to send their faculty for evaluation duty. “The argument from the self-financing colleges is that teachers should not be asked to cancel their classes and come to the university [for evaluation]…So I have announced that we will declare a week’s leave for students, so that all teachers are free for evaluation. We will complete all evaluation within a week,” he said.

BA Tamil in decline

Three colleges have asked permission to discontinue their BA Tamil courses as there is not enough demand from students. “Several colleges say they are getting only single-digit students,” he said. The vice-chancellor feels that colleges would do better if they included more job-oriented elements to the BA Tamil syllabus and replaced some of the ancient Tamil literature with some “lighter” pieces.

“I have asked the three colleges to wait while we reform the curriculum,” he said. A committee has been set up to make the University’s BA Tamil course more application-oriented, including computer knowledge, media training and spoken Tamil modules, he said.

Rs. 10.5 lakh funding for university researcher

TIRUCHI: Under its Fast Track Young Scientists programme, the Department of Science and Technology in New Delhi has provided Rs. 10.5 lakh to S. Achiraman, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University, to carry out an elaborate assessment of pheromones and their carrier proteins in goat urine.

The research is titled ‘Assessment of Estrus specific urinary pheromone(s) and their binding proteins in goat (Capra indicus): A new insight in livestock production’.

According to Dr. Achiraman, artificial insemination system rapidly improves the selection differential of goat population. However, despite relying on high expertise in laparoscopic insemination, a producer may face economic loss due to failure in conception.

Reproduction in animals relies on pheromones, the chemical senses that are released by one organism and induces change in behaviour/social of another organism of the same species.

Some specific pheromones and their carrier proteins are released during ovulatory (estrus) phase of reproductive cycle.

Hence, the assessment of ovulatory specific pheromones and their carrier proteins in urine will help in easy identification of ovulatory stage, and through artificial insemination, live stock population could be increased, said Dr. Achiraman.

Come forward to appear for competitive examinations: TNPSC Chairman

SALEM: Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Chairman A.M. Kasi Viswanathan appealed to students to come forward to appear for the competitive examinations conducted by various recruitment agencies of the Central and State governments including the TNPSC. Students should prepare for the competitive examinations during their college days and try to appear for the tests immediately after completing their undergraduate programme, he told mediapersons here on Monday.

But a majority of the students coming out the colleges were not showing interest in appearing for the competitive examinations to get the government employment. “There are a number of opportunities available with the government departments,” he said. The Commission, he said, was conducting awareness programmes in different parts of the State to encourage the younger generation to appear for the competitive examinations. Later, addressing a gathering of students at Government Arts College, Mr. Kasi Viswanathan said that perseverance and hard work were vital to emerge successful in the competitive examinations. Students should put in wholehearted efforts during their college days to improve their general knowledge, logical and language skills. A number of candidates coming from the rural areas were found lacking good communication skills. Women candidates were found poor in current affairs. About 30 per cent of the posts were reserved for women. But many educated women were not applying for the government posts. This trend should change.

Mr. Kasi Viswanathan urged the students to develop the habit of reading newspapers. The Commission had ensured greater transparency in the conduct of the competitive examinations.

Joint Director of Collegiate Education Ramamoorthy, College Principal Seetharaman and senior faculty members were present.

    Students conduct study of tanks

COIMBATORE: Five students of Class IX of PSGG Kanya Gurukulam Higher Secondary School here have conducted a study of the tanks in and around Coimbatore as part of their project for the National Children Science Congress.

With guidance from experts in the Public Works Department, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and the PSG College of Arts and Science, the students took samples from six lakes (Singanallur, Ukkadam, Muthannankulam, Kannampalayam, Sulur Chinnakulam and Periyakulam) and studied various parameters.

In the three-month project, they studied and compared the results for hardness, ph and alkaline levels and calcium and chloride content.

They also initiated several measures at the school-level to bring down waste. In an effort to create awareness among the public on the need to protect these lakes, the students presented their findings in different forums.

At the school-level, they calculated the number of plastic tumblers used annually by the faculty and students and approached the school management to replace these with stainless steel tumblers. They have also banned the use of plastics in the school.

Their efforts focus on water conservation, reduction in the use of plastics and bringing down water pollution.

If the lakes go dry, the climate of the city would be affected. Hence, these measures need to be taken at all levels, they say.

    library movement in the State

THURAIYUR: The library movement in the State received a big boost when a record number of 1,254 school students enrolled themselves as members of the Thuraiyur Branch Library in a single day under the ‘Namathu Ulagam Noolagam’ (Our World Library) Scheme recently.

A function in this regard was organised jointly by the Readers Circle of the Thuraiyur Branch Library and the Sowdambika Matriculation Higher Secondary School on the institution premises.

The ‘Our World Library’ Movement was launched in the State following the declaration of 2009-10 as ‘Library Rejuvenation Year.’ It was mainly aimed at improving the performance of public libraries across the State and enrolling more members. The students, all from Sowdambika Matriculation HSS, paid a membership fee of Rs.30 each.

    K. Swaminathan, Chief Educational Officer, handed over membership cards to the students in the presence of A.P.Sivakumar, District Library Officer.

Mr. Swaminathan said that libraries played a vital role in shaping a bright future for the younger generation.

Students should cultivate the reading habit and set up library of their own in their homes by buying a book every month. Mr.Sivakumar said Sowdambika Matriculation HSS was the only school in the district to account for such a high library membership.

He sought the cooperation of the School Education Department for the successful implementation of the scheme in the district. “All the 116 libraries in the district — central library 1, branch libraries 60 and rural libraries 55 — are involved in enrolling as many school students as possible as members during the current year, Mr.Sivakumar added.

Indian IT industry in the recovery mode S. Ramadorai, Vice-Chairman

THANJAVUR: “The Indian IT industry is very much in the recovery mode and the global indications are positively reinforcing for the IT growth in the years to come,” said S. Ramadorai, Vice-Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), here on Saturday.

Delivering the ‘Knowledge Leadership Forum Lecture’ at SASTRA University, Mr. Ramadorai shared the reactions of the IT industry during tough and unpredictable times after the sub-prime crisis and related how TCS took this challenge as an opportunity.

Despite the global economic downturn, TCS resorted to various strategic interventions supported by the leadership team and its employees to weather the crisis. Customer focus and retention, absorption of relevant technology, organisational operations, etc., were some of the interventions that TCS made to counter the crisis.

Mr. Ramadorai stressed on the need for trans-industry innovation and how it should extend beyond conventional boundaries and highlighted the need for COIN – CO-Innovation Network. “Affordable healthcare, Tata’s Nano car, Chandrayaan project, which was the cheapest moon mission for the 21st century at a cost of Rs.356 crore, TCS’s fastest supercomputer in Asia, are due to native innovation which needs to be leveraged during times of crisis”, Mr.Ramadorai added. There is a plenty of innovation at the bottom of the pyramid and Mr. Ramadorai advised the students to be visionary and not just illusionary. With signs of upturn, Mr. Ramodorai advised the students to build technological expertise along with domain knowledge to remain competitive.

Earlier, Prof. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean of SASTRA University, retraced the global financial tsunami and its impact and how companies like TCS, during such times of adversity unlearn a lot, to learn new concepts and successfully experiment new strategies.

He also shared with the audience how 5 Nobel Laureates in Economics could not agree to a common reason for the crisis and hence could not suggest one common solution to this chaotic global economic architecture. Mr. Ramadorai distributed merit scholarships worth Rs.60 lakh to more than 700 students of SASTRA University and congratulated the university for recognising merit not only in its admission but also during the academic pursuit of the students.

"Each school or college can adopt a monument in their neighbourhood," said K K Muhammed, chief of ASI, Delhi circle. "While students can do the general cleaning, the ASI staff will do the technical/chemical cleaning."

The `Adopt a Heritage' movement kicked off in Delhi with volunteers doing some work at Qutub Minar on Friday.

More than 500 student volunteers from various colleges of Delhi came together with 15 international volunteers from six countries to do some cleaning after a day's orientation programme on Thursday.

Kota Nakai, a Japanese volunteer, said, "It has been a great sharing experience right since yesterday's orientation session."

The movement is a joint effort by the Delhi circle of ASI, and Universal Peace Federation (UPF)-Asian Leadership Training (ALT), and the National Service Scheme (NSS).

David Mclackland of the UPF said it was the students who came up with the idea. "During the brainstorming session, students suggested that we can carry out cleaning activity at a heritage monument. We then approached the ASI and here we are," he said.

Although it is a first of its kind effort in Delhi, the ASI has carried out a similar experiment successfully in Madhya Pradesh in 2005.

"Don't think this is symbolic gesture," said Meyi Jamir, a second-year DU student. "We can always approach people across India and tell them how they can contribute individually to maintain and preserve our heritage."
